Retro Bowl hides the team-switching option at the bottom of the Front Office menu, and most players quit their careers without ever finding it.

The short version

  • Switch teams by resigning through the Front Office menu, then accepting offers from other franchises during the offseason
  • Change offensive plays during any game by pausing and selecting a different formation before the snap
  • Start a completely new career by deleting your save in Settings, then choosing a new team from scratch
  • Adjust playbook strategy by hiring a better offensive coordinator in Free Agency to unlock more formations
  • Mid-season trades and draft picks let you reshape your roster without switching teams entirely

What you need before changing teams or plays

You need nothing physical to switch teams or adjust plays in Retro Bowl. The game runs entirely on your phone or tablet. Everything happens inside the menus.

Before you resign from a team, screenshot your current record and roster if you want to remember them. Retro Bowl keeps no cloud backup. Deleting your save erases everything permanently.

If you're mid-season and want to keep your progress, wait until the offseason to resign. Leaving mid-season forfeits the rest of that year. You'll miss playoff opportunities and any draft picks you've earned.

  • Retro Bowl app installed and a career started
  • Current season completed if you want to preserve your playoff run
  • Screenshots of stats or rosters you want to keep, since the game stores nothing in the cloud

How to switch teams in Retro Bowl mid-career

Tap the hamburger menu in the top-left corner of the main screen. It's three horizontal lines. Scroll down and tap Front Office. This menu shows your coaching staff, salary cap, and team morale. Before you commit to anything, it is worth looking at matching bowl size to bird needs.

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Front Office screen. You'll see a button labeled Resign. Tap it. The game asks you to confirm. Tap Yes.

You're now unemployed. The season calendar advances to the offseason. Other teams with open coaching jobs send you offers. Each offer shows the team name, their current roster strength, and the salary cap they're offering.

Tap the offer you want. The game loads your new team immediately. You keep your coaching stats and Retro Bowl wins, but you lose your previous roster. Your new team comes with its existing players, their contracts, and its draft position. The other half of this decision is compact budgie playstand options.

  1. Tap the three-line menu icon in the top-left corner of the main screen
  2. Select Front Office from the menu list
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Resign
  4. Confirm by tapping Yes on the popup
  5. Review job offers from other teams during the offseason
  6. Tap the team you want to join and start your new season

How to adjust play settings or formations during a game

During any offensive play, you can change your formation before the snap. The game shows four to six play icons at the bottom of the screen, depending on your offensive coordinator's skill level. Each icon represents a different formation: runs, short passes, long passes, and special plays.

Tap the icon for the play you want. The players shift into the new formation instantly. You can switch plays as many times as you like before snapping the ball. There's no penalty for changing your mind.

If you want to adjust your default play-calling tendencies, pause the game by tapping the pause icon in the top-right corner. You'll see a settings menu. This menu doesn't let you permanently change plays, but you can tweak difficulty and game speed, which changes how much time you have to react.

To unlock more formations, hire a better offensive coordinator during Free Agency. Coordinators with higher star ratings give you access to more play options. A three-star coordinator unlocks six formations instead of four. You'll see the difference immediately in your next game.

How to start a new game with a different team from scratch

If you want to abandon your current career entirely and pick a new team, you need to delete your save. Tap the hamburger menu, then Settings. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Save. The game warns you that this is permanent. Tap Yes.

The game returns to the title screen. Tap New Game. You'll see a list of all 32 teams in Retro Bowl. Each team shows its city, mascot, and uniform colors. No team has a starting advantage. They all begin with randomly generated rosters of similar overall strength.

Tap the team you want. The game generates a roster and drops you into the preseason. You start with a blank record, no coaching credits, and a default difficulty setting. If you want to change difficulty, do it now in Settings before you play your first game.

Deleting your save wipes everything: your Retro Bowl championships, your hall-of-fame players, your coaching stats, and any custom team edits you made. There's no undo. If you only want to switch teams but keep your career stats, resign instead of deleting.

  1. Tap the hamburger menu in the top-left corner
  2. Select Settings
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Save
  4. Confirm by tapping Yes
  5. Tap New Game on the title screen
  6. Choose your new team from the list of 32 franchises
  7. Adjust difficulty in Settings if needed, then start your first season

Changing your roster without switching teams

You don't have to leave your team to rebuild it. Tap the hamburger menu, then Roster. You'll see your current players, their positions, salaries, and contract lengths. Scroll down to see your salary cap space and the total number of roster spots filled.

To cut a player, tap their name, then tap Release. You free up their salary immediately, but you lose their stats and morale contribution. Cut players during the offseason to avoid mid-season roster chaos. Released players disappear from the game; you can't re-sign them later.

During the offseason, tap Free Agency in the hamburger menu. You'll see a list of available players at every position, sorted by overall rating. Each player shows their salary demand and contract length. Sign the ones you need, as long as you stay under the salary cap.

The Draft happens once per year after the playoffs. You get picks based on your regular-season record. Worse teams pick earlier. Tap the player you want when your pick comes up. Draft picks are cheap and stay on rookie contracts for three years, so they're the best way to build a young roster without blowing your cap space.

  • Release players: Roster → tap player → Release, but only in the offseason to avoid morale drops
  • Free Agency: sign available players during the offseason if you have cap space, prioritizing positions where you're weak
  • Draft: pick young talent after the playoffs, focusing on high-potential players with three-year rookie contracts
  • Trades: not available in Retro Bowl, so you can't swap players with other teams mid-season

Common mistakes when switching teams or adjusting plays

Most players tap everywhere in the menus looking for a "Switch Teams" button. It doesn't exist. The option is buried at the bottom of the Front Office screen, labeled Resign. If you don't scroll all the way down, you'll never find it.

Another mistake: resigning in the middle of a playoff run. You forfeit the rest of the season instantly. You don't get to finish the year or compete for a championship. If you're in the playoffs, wait until the offseason. The same rule applies if you're chasing a perfect season or a personal record.

Players also change formations mid-play without realizing the snap is automatic once you stop tapping. If you tap a new play icon and then hesitate, the quarterback snaps the ball into the wrong formation. Decide your play before the play clock runs low. Don't switch at the last second.

Deleting your save to switch teams is overkill. You lose your entire coaching history, all your Retro Bowl rings, and your hall-of-fame players. If you only want a new team, resign and take a new job. Deleting is only necessary if you want to restart from scratch with no stats.

  • Scrolling halfway through Front Office and giving up → scroll all the way to the bottom to see Resign
  • Quitting mid-season to switch teams → wait until the offseason so you keep your playoff shot and draft position
  • Changing plays too late in the play clock → pick your formation early, before the clock drops under 5 seconds
  • Deleting your save just to try a new team → use Resign instead to keep your coaching stats and championships
  • Releasing players mid-season → cut during the offseason to avoid tanking team morale and losing winnable games

Questions people still ask

Can I switch teams in Retro Bowl without losing my career stats?

Yes. Resign through the Front Office menu and accept a new job in the offseason. You keep your coaching wins, Retro Bowl championships, and hall-of-fame players. Only your current roster changes. Deleting your save wipes everything, so don't do that unless you want a completely fresh start.

How many offensive plays can I choose from in Retro Bowl?

You get four to six formations, depending on your offensive coordinator's star rating. A one-star coordinator gives you four plays. A three-star coordinator unlocks six. Hire better coordinators in Free Agency to expand your playbook. You can't manually add plays or edit formations.

What happens to my team if I resign mid-season?

Your season ends immediately. You forfeit all remaining games, including playoffs. The calendar advances to the offseason and you receive job offers from other teams. If you're in the playoff hunt or chasing a record, wait until the season ends. There's no way to finish the year after resigning.

Can I go back to a team I resigned from in Retro Bowl?

Only if they offer you a job in a future offseason. Teams don't always have openings, and high-performing teams rarely fire their coaches. You might never see that team again. If you're attached to a roster, trade and draft to rebuild it instead of leaving.

Does Retro Bowl save my progress in the cloud?

No. All saves are local to your device. If you delete the app, switch phones, or delete your save, everything is gone permanently. Screenshot your stats and rosters if you want a record. There's no way to recover a deleted save.

I've resigned from three teams in Retro Bowl chasing better rosters, and every time I've regretted leaving a quarterback I'd spent two seasons developing.
